Silicon Valley claims it has a large hiring problem. But these claims really seem to just be coming from Silicon Valley or seem to be a lot worse in Silicon Valley. So my theory is that problem specific to Silicon Valley.
This is within the context of Why money doesn't motivate people
Which argues that money doesn't really motivate people.
The basic assumptions are.:
Money does bring the best people.
Money can help you retain the best people
The problems are:
Money brings the people best at interviewing.
Money helps you retain the people best at interviewing.
So the problem is that people will now go to greater lengths to hide their incompetence because they see the advantages of Silicon Valley.
This means that Google, etc will have a lot more difficulty at finding a good employee. Because it is a lot easier to fake an interview and a resume than it is to actually be a good employee and there are a lot of rewards for doing so.
So in order to fix their hiring problem Silicon Valley should do the following.
They should have a third party hiring process. One that doesn't reveal much about the company.
By removing the perceived advantages of working for their company they will get more honest interviews. The candidates will look much worse, but they will be giving a much more accurate view of how they will actually be as employees
